The Secrets of Longevity

Life expectancy is on the increase, yet we cannot take for granted that we will live a long and healthy life. Longevity involves many elements; from what we eat as fuel, to our mindset, our genetics and how much we move. 

The average 45 year old Australian male is expected to live to around 82 and females until 85. So how can you make sure that you live a healthy as well as long life, avoiding disease and ill health later in life?

Here are some proven ways to protect your heart, skin and mind and live longer:

Eat the Mediterranean way:

Research indicates that following the traditional dietary habits and lifestyle unique to the Mediterranean region lower the incidence of chronic diseases and improve longevity. To eat the Mediterranean way choose;

  • Primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts
  • Olive oil and canola oil over butter
  • Add herbs and spices not salt to foods
  • To limit red meat to once a week or less
  • Plenty of fish and poultry 
  • To exercise regularly

Meditate:

Taking care of your mental state should be top of the priority list along with your diet and fitness as stress can speed up the bodies ageing process. Growing research into the benefits of meditation show it can reduce stress and anxiety levels, lower blood pressure, and increase happiness. 

To get started try a simple 5 minute meditation by sitting still. eyes shut and concentrating on your breathing. Place a hand on your stomach and feel the rise and fall of  this area as you breath deeply.

Once you have mastered this, try a podcast or guided meditation. Headspace have a great programme for beginners.

Stay active:

Staying active is important to longevity and reduces the risk of many chronic diseases  Getting regular exercise burns body fat, reduces blood sugar levels and lowers cholesterol. It also helps the brain stay sharp and the bones stay strong. Walking, swimming, Pilates, tennis .. the list is endless. There is an exercise regime out there for everyone.

Another great way to stay active is to do more of what you love: Find a hobby that you are passionate about. By making time for the things you love, your brain, mind and health overall will benefit as a result.  

Be safe: 

Sun screen is very important, especially here in Australia. Looking and feeling youthful is as important on the outside as it is on the inside, So taking care of your outer shell is also key. If you are planning a walk outside, don’t skip the sunscreen and ensure to cleanse your face before bed. This will ensure pores are cleaned out of dirt and oil. Seal the pores from the air with a splash of cold water, to open, use warm water.
