Be A Beach Bum For Fitness Benefits
There are so many great things about bringing your workout to the beach. Not only are you getting yourself some fresh air, vitamin D and the sea breeze but you get to be in nature and away from the gym!
Did you know that swapping your street or park walk for the best can have a world of benefits?
Simply adding in a 30-60 minute walk on a combination of wet and soft sand will ensure your legs are getting the workout they deserve and your heart rate will be sure to up and rising.
When you run or walk on the sand your body moves differently. Your feet normally have a force below them to propel them forward with force, strength and power. With sand this is not the case as it moves with your body under your feet and you lose some of that power, hence why it seems harder to get somewhere when you are on the beach.
Try these simple tips to get the most out of your time at the beach:
Take a friend and chat away while walking, you will be lapping up the kilometres in no time and won’t even be feeling the burn until the next morning.
Distraction is key to be motivated and keep going, bring along your dog to help you clock up some running or jogging.
You burn more calories from walking or running on the sand so go for a combination of both. The classic walk 20 run 20 paces is a good start, then try to walk 1 minute, run 1 minute and build up your fitness over time. Soon you will be burning fat and building fitness even quicker!
Running on the beach will teach you better technique and consistency for when you are not on the sand. Aim for 1-2 sessions on the beach as part of your running routine.
Ensure you slip, slop, slap and wrap. Avoid talking your shirt off and wear sleeves where possible, yes you will be sweaty, but that is what it is all about!
Wear a hat and sunglasses.
Go for a refreshing dip after your run, not only is it a great motivator to know you get a dip at the end to rinse off the hard work, but it is super great for your metabolism and will wake you up!
